Urea-formaldehyde resin is a prepolymer formed by the polycondensation of urea and formaldehyde under alkaline or acidic conditions, while phenolic resin is a prepolymer formed by the polycondensation of phenol and formaldehyde under alkaline or acidic conditions. Then, under the action of a curing agent or auxiliary agent, an insoluble and infusible cured resin is formed.

Due to the advantages of urea-formaldehyde resin such as good initial bonding strength, fast curing, light color, no pollution to wood, high bonding strength, and convenient use, it has been widely used in plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard, secondary processing of wood-based panels, paper products, fiber products, interior decoration and other fields. It is currently the adhesive with the largest output, accounting for more than 80% of the total output of wood adhesives. It is also the lowest-priced synthetic resin, with competitiveness that is difficult to be replaced by other types of adhesives. Since the first patent for using urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive as a plywood adhesive was published in 1929, the consumption of urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive has always been the largest among all adhesives. According to reports, 80% of plywood in Japan, 100% of particleboard in Germany, and 100% of particleboard in the United Kingdom use urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive. The annual consumption of urea-formaldehyde adhesive in China's wood industry is no less than 900Wt.
